Jackson, Kentucky – A rapidly changing stretch of weather is set to impact eastern Kentucky, starting with gusty winds today and ending with lingering snow showers that could affect travel through the end of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, breezy conditions will continue this afternoon with wind gusts reaching 25 to 35 mph as a mix of sun and clouds holds across the region. Rain chances increase late today and this evening, with rain becoming more widespread overnight.
By Wednesday evening, colder air pushes in, causing rain to transition to a rain-and-snow mix before changing to all snow overnight. Temperatures will fall quickly, increasing the risk of slick roads by early Thursday, especially on untreated surfaces and higher elevations across Breathitt, Perry, and surrounding counties.
Snow showers are expected to linger Thursday, with daytime highs only reaching the mid to upper 20s in Jackson. While heavy accumulation is not guaranteed, even light snow could impact the Thursday morning commute and school travel. Gusty winds earlier in the week may also contribute to reduced visibility during snow showers.
Unsettled weather continues into Friday and Saturday, with scattered snow showers possible both days. Temperatures remain cold, with highs generally in the 30s and overnight lows dipping into the teens. These conditions may allow refreezing each night, increasing the risk of icy patches on roads, bridges, and sidewalks.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items today, allow extra travel time overnight and Thursday morning, and keep emergency supplies in vehicles. Dressing in layers and limiting unnecessary travel during snow showers is advised.
Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve, and officials urge residents to monitor updates closely through the weekend.
