Illinois – Wind rattles loose branches this morning as gray clouds press low over the city. Sidewalks feel damp and cold, and the air carries that familiar January bite. Winter is shifting gears, and Chicago will feel it quickly.

According to the National Weather Service, breezy conditions continue today with highs near 51 before temperatures tumble. Scattered snow showers develop later, especially toward Wednesday, as colder air pours in from the northwest. Gusts may reach 30 to 40 mph at times, reducing visibility during brief bursts of snow.

Across northern Illinois, the bigger story is the temperature slide. After mild conditions early, highs drop into the upper 20s to near 30 by Thursday. That swing raises concerns for flash freezing, especially where snow showers melt during the day and refreeze after sunset.

In Chicago, snow showers become more common Wednesday and Wednesday night. Accumulation appears light, but timing matters. Roads like I-90, I-94, and Lake Shore Drive could turn slick during heavier bursts, particularly with strong crosswinds off the lake. Conditions may deteriorate quickly by evening.

Thursday brings a brief break with sunshine, but it stays cold. Another round of snow chances returns Thursday night into Friday. Even minor snowfall, paired with falling temperatures, can snarl travel and slow commutes. Plan extra time and keep a winter kit in the car.

By the weekend, colder air locks in. Highs stay in the low 20s, with additional snow showers possible Saturday. Winter coats, gloves, and caution are back in full force.

More advisories may be issued as snow chances sharpen. Driving later this week? Let us know how roads look where you are.
