Louisville, Kentucky – Gusty winds are expected to develop across central Kentucky on Tuesday, potentially impacting travel and outdoor activities across the Louisville metro area as warmer and drier air moves into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, southwest winds will increase Tuesday afternoon with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph, especially across northern portions of the state, including Jefferson, Oldham, Bullitt, and Shelby counties. These winds will accompany above-normal temperatures, with highs climbing into the lower to mid-50s.

While no precipitation is expected, the strong winds may make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles along major roadways such as Interstate 64, Interstate 65, Interstate 71, and the Gene Snyder Freeway (KY-841). Motorists traveling on elevated roadways and bridges should be prepared for sudden gusts, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Loose outdoor objects, including trash cans, holiday decorations, and construction materials, may be blown around by the stronger gusts. Residents are encouraged to secure lightweight items and use caution if working outdoors. The combination of dry air and gusty winds may also briefly elevate fire danger in open areas, though widespread fire weather concerns are not expected.

Winds will gradually diminish Tuesday evening as the pressure gradient relaxes, allowing conditions to calm overnight. Dry weather is expected to continue into midweek, though changes are possible later as a colder pattern develops toward the second half of the week.

Residents should remain aware of changing conditions Tuesday afternoon and plan accordingly. While this is not a severe weather event, the combination of strong winds and increased traffic during peak hours could lead to localized travel issues, especially for commuters and commercial drivers.

Additional updates will be issued if wind speeds increase beyond current expectations.
