Glasgow, Montana – Strong west winds are set to intensify across northeast Montana on Monday, creating hazardous travel conditions and raising fire danger concerns across the Hi-Line and surrounding plains.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, west winds will strengthen Monday morning and continue through Monday night. Gusts could reach up to 60 mph at times in Phillips County, where a High Wind Warning is in effect. Strong winds will also extend across much of northeast Montana, with widespread gusts between 40 and 55 mph expected.

The most significant impacts are expected on north-to-south roadways, where dangerous crosswinds could make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles. U.S. Highway 2, U.S. Highway 191, and Highway 24 may see sudden gusts capable of pushing vehicles off course, especially in open country. Communities including Glasgow, Malta, Zortman, Whitewater, and Jordan will likely experience prolonged periods of strong winds.

In addition to travel hazards, the combination of strong winds and exposed ground will lead to elevated fire danger Monday. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose items that could become airborne.

Winds are expected to gradually ease later Monday night. Additional warnings or advisories may be issued if conditions intensify or expand into neighboring counties.
