Gray, Maine – A widespread Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across much of Maine and New Hampshire as mixed precipitation and accumulating snow continue to impact travel through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, the advisory covers central, southern, and western Maine, as well as large portions of northern, central, and southern New Hampshire, and is scheduled to expire at 7 p.m. EST Sunday.
Forecasts call for mixed precipitation, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with snow accumulations generally up to 3 inches across southern and central areas. In northern and western interior sections, including parts of Oxford, Franklin, and Somerset counties, snow totals of 2 to 6 inches are expected, with light sleet and ice possible. Ice accumulations around a light glaze and sleet up to one-tenth of an inch are also forecast in several areas.
Air temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, allowing snow and ice to accumulate on roads, bridges, and untreated surfaces. The National Weather Service warns that even lighter snow amounts may still result in dangerous driving conditions, especially during periods of reduced visibility.
Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects and could cause isolated tree limb damage, though the risk of power outages remains limited. Travel impacts are expected to persist throughout the day as precipitation continues intermittently.
Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, reduce speeds, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Updated road conditions for both states are available at newengland511.org.
Winter Weather Advisories are issued when conditions are expected to cause significant travel disruptions, even if snowfall or ice amounts remain below warning thresholds.
