Fitchburg, Massachusetts – Drivers across central and western Massachusetts could encounter slick and icy roads beginning late this afternoon as a round of mixed precipitation spreads across the region and lingers into Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from late this afternoon through Sunday morning for portions of western and north-central Massachusetts. Light snow accumulations up to one inch are expected, along with ice buildup approaching two tenths of an inch, enough to create hazardous travel conditions on untreated roads.

The advisory includes northern Worcester and northern Middlesex counties, along with western Franklin, western Hampden, and western Hampshire counties. Communities such as Fitchburg, Ayer, Barre, Charlemont, Chesterfield, and Blandford are likely to see a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, especially during the evening and overnight hours. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads could become icy quickly after sunset.

Residents are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use extra caution when traveling. Pedestrians should be careful on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways where ice may be difficult to see. Allowing extra time for travel and avoiding unnecessary trips tonight could reduce the risk of accidents.

Conditions should gradually improve later Sunday morning as precipitation tapers, but lingering icy spots may persist. Additional statements or extensions remain possible if freezing conditions last longer than expected.
