Newport, North Carolina – Eastern North Carolina is settling into a calm and pleasant January day as early morning fog and lingering clouds give way to sunshine and unseasonably warm temperatures across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, patchy fog lingering across inland areas early this morning is expected to dissipate by mid-morning. As the fog clears, skies will gradually turn mostly sunny through the afternoon and evening, setting up a warm and comfortable day for coastal and inland communities alike.

High temperatures are forecast to climb well above normal for this time of year, reaching the upper 60s to lower 70s across much of eastern North Carolina. Cities including Morehead City, New Bern, Greenville, Kinston, Jacksonville, and areas along the Crystal Coast will enjoy mild conditions with light winds and dry weather. Coastal communities may remain slightly cooler but still well above January averages.

Drivers inland should remain cautious early this morning where fog briefly reduces visibility, especially along rural roads and near waterways. Conditions improve quickly as temperatures rise and visibility returns.

The mild pattern is expected to continue through the weekend, offering several more days of above-average temperatures. While today remains quiet and pleasant, residents are encouraged to stay updated on future changes as the broader pattern evolves later next week.
