Fairbanks, Alaska – Blizzard conditions are creating dangerous travel and whiteout conditions across large portions of western Alaska, with powerful winds and blowing snow expected to continue through early Wednesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, Blizzard Warnings are in effect for parts of the West Coast, including the Western North Slope and the western Seward Peninsula. Wind gusts near 60 mph combined with falling and blowing snow are reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less, making travel extremely hazardous or impossible in exposed areas.

Communities along the coast, including Point Hope, Point Lay, Wales, and areas near Nome, are facing the most severe impacts. The strong winds are expected to persist overnight, leading to extensive blowing and drifting snow that could block roads and airstrips. Emergency officials warn that conditions may change rapidly, even in areas where snowfall rates are light.

Farther inland, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Eastern Alaska Range through early Wednesday morning. Additional snowfall of 2 to 5 inches is expected, with blowing snow reducing visibility to around a half mile at times, particularly in passes and higher terrain.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, secure loose items, and ensure emergency supplies are ready. The National Weather Service notes that conditions should gradually improve after daybreak Wednesday, though lingering blowing snow may continue in open areas, and additional advisories remain possible.
