Minnesota — Windshields glaze, sidewalks shine, and tires hiss on slick pavement as freezing rain spreads across the Twin Cities. A thin, dangerous layer of ice is forming on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks early this morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon CST for Minneapolis–St. Paul and much of central and eastern Minnesota. Temperatures hover just above freezing, allowing rain to freeze on contact. Ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are possible, enough to cause travel problems.

Dense fog adds another hazard. Visibility drops quickly in spots, especially near rivers and low-lying roads. Drivers may not see brake lights ahead until it’s too late. Slow speeds and extra following distance are essential this morning.

Conditions gradually improve later today as precipitation tapers and temperatures stabilize near 34–38°F. Even then, slick patches may linger on shaded roads and sidewalks. School drop-offs and late-morning errands still require caution.

Tonight turns colder, with lows near 24°F, allowing any moisture to refreeze. Watch for black ice early Wednesday, especially on ramps and overpasses. Skies clear Wednesday afternoon, offering a brief break with highs near 38°F.

Thursday stays seasonably cold and dry, while clouds increase again late week. By Friday night into Saturday, meteorologists are tracking another round of light snow. Accumulations look minor for now, but timing could affect weekend travel across southern and eastern Minnesota.

Travel tips: slow down, avoid sudden braking, and walk carefully on steps and sidewalks. Keep emergency supplies in vehicles during this icy stretch.
