Albany, New York – Drivers across eastern New York and parts of New England could face slippery travel beginning late Tuesday afternoon as a widespread wintry mix spreads into the region, creating icy road conditions through Wednesday morning. The most hazardous period is expected overnight and during the early morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from late Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday for a large portion of eastern New York, western Massachusetts, southern Vermont, and northwestern Connecticut. A mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected, with ice accumulations reaching up to two-tenths of an inch in higher terrain and up to a tenth of an inch across lower elevations. Snow and sleet totals could approach two inches in parts of the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Berkshires.
The Capital Region, including Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and Saratoga Springs, is expected to see a period of freezing rain Tuesday evening before a transition to plain rain overnight. Areas farther north and west, including the Lake George region, Schoharie Valley, and southern Adirondacks, may remain locked into a wintry mix longer, leading to more persistent icy conditions.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution on bridges, hills, and untreated roads. Pedestrians should also watch for icy sidewalks and steps. Advisories remain in effect through Wednesday morning, and slick spots may linger even after precipitation tapers.
