Boston, Massachusetts – Drivers across southern New England should prepare for slippery roads Tuesday evening as freezing rain spreads across much of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and Rhode Island, setting the stage for hazardous travel overnight and into Wednesday morning. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are expected to become slick quickly after sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston and Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning for a large portion of the region. Areas along the I-95 corridor, including Boston, Quincy, and Providence, are expected to see a light glaze of ice, while interior sections of Massachusetts and northern Connecticut could receive between one-tenth and two-tenths of an inch of ice.

Communities such as Worcester, Lowell, Lawrence, Springfield, Amherst, Hartford, and Willimantic are likely to experience the greatest impacts, particularly during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. Even minor ice accumulation can lead to spin-outs, slower traffic, and an increased risk of falls on sidewalks and driveways. Isolated power outages are also possible where ice builds up on trees and lines.

Officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Pedestrians should use caution on stairs and walkways. The advisory remains in effect through Wednesday morning, with lingering slick spots possible even after precipitation tapers.
