Minnesota’s Northland wakes to dim skies, frozen breath, and damp pavement that already feels uneasy underfoot. In Duluth and surrounding communities, fog hugs the ground early, blurring headlights and hiding patches of glaze that signal a long winter stretch ahead.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect starting this evening as freezing rain develops and continues into Tuesday. Ice accumulations could reach up to two-tenths of an inch across northeastern Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, including St. Louis, Crow Wing, Pine, and Aitkin counties.

Fog thickens first, especially near Lake Superior and along U.S. Highway 53, Highway 2, and local county roads. As temperatures stay in the 20s, rain freezes on contact, turning untreated roads slick fast. Bridges and elevated surfaces ice up earliest, raising the risk for spin-outs and slowdowns.

Drivers should plan extra time and reduce speed this evening and into the Tuesday morning commute. To be fair, conditions may look manageable at first glance, but ice spreads quietly and quickly. School transportation, delivery routes, and early-shift workers face the highest risk window.

Freezing rain tapers Tuesday morning, but low clouds linger. A brief break arrives Wednesday with partial sunshine and highs climbing into the mid-30s, offering some melting during the day. That relief does not last.

Another round of winter weather enters the picture late Thursday into Friday, with snow chances increasing into the weekend. Several inches of snow are possible by Saturday as colder air deepens its grip across the Northland.

Winter Weather Alerts may expand or be extended as systems line up this week. Traveling later today or Tuesday morning? Share what road conditions look like where you are.
