Albany, New York – Drivers across eastern New York and western New England should prepare for slippery roads beginning Tuesday afternoon as light snow spreads into the region, followed by a wintry mix that could create icy conditions into Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, light snow is expected to overspread much of eastern New York between late morning and midafternoon Tuesday, reaching the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, and Adirondacks first before expanding east into western New England. Snow will continue into the evening hours before tapering off overnight, with most areas picking up one to three inches. Higher totals are possible in the Adirondacks and parts of the western Mohawk Valley, including Old Forge, Herkimer, and Newcomb.
The Tuesday evening commute may be impacted, especially along I-90, I-87, Route 7, and Route 30, where untreated roads could turn slick. While snowfall amounts remain on the lighter side, steady light snow may still reduce visibility at times.
Another system arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing a light wintry mix that may change to rain in some valleys. Ice accumulations are expected to be minor, but even a thin glaze could lead to hazardous travel, particularly in higher terrain and shaded areas.
Road crews are expected to be active, but drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution on bridges and secondary roads. Conditions gradually improve later Wednesday, though additional slick spots remain possible as temperatures fluctuate.
