Amarillo, Texas – Strong southwest winds are ramping up across the Texas Panhandle this morning, with gusty conditions expected to peak late in the morning and early afternoon, creating travel concerns and increasing the risk for blowing debris.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, sustained winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph today, with widespread gusts between 25 and 35 mph. There is a higher-end risk for stronger gusts topping 40 mph, especially in the corridor stretching from Stinnett to Beaver. Wind speeds are expected to peak between late morning and early afternoon before gradually easing later in the day.

Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Dumas, and Guymon will all experience breezy to windy conditions, with the strongest impacts felt in open areas and along east–west roadways. High-profile vehicles, including semis and RVs, may have difficulty maintaining control during peak gusts. Blowing dust is also possible in rural areas, briefly reducing visibility.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items such as trash cans, patio furniture, and holiday decorations before winds strengthen further. Drivers should use caution, especially during the midday hours when gusts are strongest.

Winds are expected to diminish by mid to late afternoon, bringing improving conditions by evening. While today’s winds are the main concern, residents should stay alert for additional windy periods later this week as active weather continues across the Panhandle.
