Albany, New York – A sharp drop in temperatures is expected across eastern New York and western New England tonight, with clearing skies and light winds allowing bitter cold to settle in by late evening and persist into early Monday morning. Some northern and higher-elevation communities are expected to fall below zero, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the combination of fresh snowpack, calm winds, and clear skies will promote rapid radiational cooling overnight. Temperatures across the Adirondacks, southern Vermont, and northern Mohawk Valley are forecast to dip below zero, while much of the Capital Region and Hudson Valley fall into the single digits.
Cold-sensitive areas including Glens Falls, Lake George, Old Forge, and Newcomb face the coldest conditions, while Albany, Schenectady, and Pittsfield are expected to bottom out in the single digits. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions, and the risk of hypothermia increases for anyone without proper cold-weather protection.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors overnight and early Monday. Pets should be brought indoors, and those relying on supplemental heat sources should ensure they are used safely.
Temperatures will begin to recover Monday afternoon as sunshine returns, but the early morning cold will be among the harshest of the season. Additional cold weather advisories remain possible if conditions intensify overnight.
