Chicago, Illinois – A milder and mostly quiet weather pattern is setting up across northern Illinois as the first full workweek of the new year gets underway, bringing a steady warmup and limited precipitation concerns through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, Sunday remains on the cool side with highs in the low to mid-30s. A brief window for a light wintry mix may develop this evening near the Wisconsin state line, but impacts are expected to be minimal and confined to far northern Illinois. Elsewhere, dry conditions prevail.

Temperatures rise noticeably Monday, with highs climbing into the upper 30s and mid-40s under mostly cloudy skies. The warming trend continues Tuesday as highs reach the low to mid-50s. Patchy drizzle and fog may develop Tuesday, mainly across northern Illinois, but widespread rain is not expected and travel impacts should remain limited.

By Wednesday and Thursday, above-normal temperatures settle in. Highs range from the low to mid-50s Wednesday and push into the upper 40s to mid-50s Thursday, giving the region a springlike feel for early January. Overnight lows also moderate, staying mostly above freezing by midweek.

Chicago, Rockford, Joliet, Aurora, and surrounding communities will all experience similar conditions, with dry weather favored through much of the period. A better chance for rain arrives late Thursday, but confidence remains low on coverage and timing.

Residents should enjoy the extended mild stretch while staying aware of brief drizzle or fog potential Tuesday and a small wintry mix risk near the Wisconsin border tonight. Overall, travel conditions improve significantly as temperatures climb and winter hazards remain limited through midweek.
