Billings, Montana – Drivers across eastern Montana are facing a slippery start to Sunday as scattered showers move through the region, bringing a wintry mix and a low but impactful chance of freezing rain during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, rain and snow showers are spreading across much of the area early Sunday, with a slight chance of freezing rain focused near the North Dakota border. Areas along Interstate 94, including Miles City, Glendive, and Baker, are most likely to see brief icing on roads where surface temperatures remain cold enough.

The main hazards include slick road conditions and brief reductions in visibility under heavier rain or snow showers. Even light freezing rain can quickly create icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads, making travel hazardous during the early morning hours.

While precipitation is expected to be scattered and short-lived, conditions may change quickly from dry to icy, especially east of Billings toward the Dakota line. Farther west, precipitation is more likely to fall as rain or a rain-snow mix, limiting ice potential.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions. Wintry impacts should diminish later this morning as precipitation tapers and temperatures slowly rise, but slick spots may linger in shaded or untreated areas. Additional updates will be issued if freezing rain becomes more widespread.
