California – Wet pavement glistened before sunrise as steady rain pressed into Southern California, signaling a soggy and unsettled start to the first weekend of 2026. Showers are already affecting daily routines, and conditions may worsen at times through Sunday night as another Atmospheric River feeds moisture into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, periods of rain and embedded thunderstorms will continue today, with the highest rainfall rates focused north of Los Angeles and along upslope terrain. East Los Angeles faces widespread rain today with temperatures rising into the lower 60s, while rainfall chances remain high into Sunday. Forecasters continue to flag a risk of localized flash flooding, especially where drainage is poor.

Across Los Angeles County, drivers should expect slick roads and reduced visibility at times, particularly on surface streets and along I-5 and Route 60. Rainfall may briefly ease later Sunday, but scattered showers are expected to linger into Monday. Plan extra travel time and avoid driving through standing water.

While snow stays well above city elevations, heavy mountain snow continues across the Sierra Nevada, with multiple feet possible. Gusty winds and isolated power issues remain possible statewide. For now, temperatures stay mild, but cooler nights early next week could allow wet roads to refreeze in colder inland valleys, raising a flash-freezing concern.

More showers may redevelop Tuesday before a gradual drying trend midweek. Weather alerts could expand as conditions evolve.
