Dodge City, Kansas – Early morning travel across southwest and central Kansas is hazardous today as dense fog sharply reduces visibility and creates the potential for slick elevated surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. CST for portions of west-central, central, and southwest Kansas. Visibility in some areas has dropped to one-quarter mile or less, especially during the early morning hours. Motorists may encounter sudden changes in visibility along highways and rural roads.

The fog is also producing pockets of freezing fog in colder locations. Very light ice accumulation is possible on bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways, increasing the risk of slick spots during the morning commute. Cities including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Pratt, and surrounding communities are within the advisory area.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra following distance. Avoid using cruise control in low-visibility conditions, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, particularly in low-lying areas and near open fields.

Conditions are expected to improve gradually late this morning as temperatures rise and fog begins to lift. Until then, caution is advised for anyone traveling early. Forecasters note that no additional winter precipitation is expected today, but impacts from fog may linger longer in isolated locations if clearing is delayed.
