Charleston, West Virginia – The first weekend of the New Year brings a rare and memorable night-sky event to West Virginia as the Wolf Moon rises as a supermoon, marking the last opportunity to see a full moon this large and bright until the end of 2026. Clear winter skies across the Appalachian region could make this one of the most striking celestial displays residents will see for years.

According to astronomical timing, the Wolf Moon reaches peak illumination early Saturday morning around 5:03 a.m. EST, but the most dramatic viewing comes later that day. Across central West Virginia, including Charleston, the moon will rise in the east shortly after sunset Saturday evening, during early twilight. That timing places the moonrise in the ideal blue-hour window, when it appears larger, brighter, and more colorful against the fading sky.

This full moon qualifies as a supermoon because it occurs near perigee, the moon’s closest point to Earth. That alignment allows the moon to appear up to 14 percent larger and roughly 30 percent brighter than an average full moon. Viewers in Huntington, Morgantown, Parkersburg, Beckley, and along the mountain ridgelines should see the moon climb higher through the evening and remain visible for much of the night.

The Wolf Moon is named for winter folklore tied to the howling of wolves during the coldest weeks of the year. January’s full moon also hangs higher in the sky than any other full moon of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, giving West Virginia one of the longest viewing windows nationwide.

For the best view, skywatchers should face east at moonrise from an open ridge, hillside, valley overlook, or wide field with a clear horizon. While the moon will appear full all night, Saturday evening offers the most dramatic contrast. Clear skies will be key. After this weekend, another supermoon will not return until late 2026, making this a standout way to begin the New Year in West Virginia.
