Lake Charles, Louisiana – The first day of the new year is bringing unseasonably warm and quiet weather across southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas, but conditions will turn breezier and more unsettled heading into Friday. Highs today are climbing into the upper 60s and low 70s, offering a springlike start to 2026 before stronger winds arrive.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, New Year’s Day will remain mostly dry with southwest winds around 5 to 10 mph. Temperatures across Lake Charles, Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Lafayette are expected to peak between 68 and 72 degrees. Marine conditions remain relatively calm today, though a low water advisory is in effect for portions of the coastal waters.
Changes arrive Friday as a low-pressure system moves through the southern Plains. South to southwest winds will increase rapidly, with gusts approaching 30 mph across much of southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas. Lake Charles and Acadiana have a higher chance of seeing gusts exceed 30 mph, especially from late morning through the afternoon. These winds may make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles and could lead to minor power disruptions.
Rain chances also increase Friday, mainly scattered showers with coverage ranging from 20 to 50 percent. Marine conditions will deteriorate quickly, with seas building to 3 to 6 feet and hazardous conditions developing for smaller vessels. Winds and seas may be even higher near thunderstorms.
Behind the system, winds shift northwest Saturday, remaining breezy early before easing later in the day. Drier air moves in Sunday with calmer conditions and slightly cooler temperatures.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, use caution while driving Friday, and monitor marine advisories closely. A wind advisory may be issued if gusts trend higher.
