Gaylord, Michigan – Accumulating lake effect snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across parts of northern Michigan through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service Gaylord, snow showers will weaken later this morning before increasing again this afternoon and continuing through Wednesday. Additional snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected across portions of northwest Lower Michigan and eastern Upper Michigan, with localized higher amounts possible.
Forecasters said the most persistent snow bands may lead to periods of reduced visibility and snow-covered roads, particularly under heavier lake effect bands. Gusty winds may further contribute to difficult travel at times.
The National Weather Service graphic indicates the heaviest snowfall potential stretching from areas near Traverse City and Gaylord northward toward the Straits and eastern Upper Peninsula, including localized pockets where totals could exceed 8 inches.
Snowfall is expected to be ongoing through Wednesday evening, with the most impactful periods occurring this afternoon, overnight, and again Wednesday. Travel conditions may vary significantly over short distances due to the localized nature of lake effect snow bands.
Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time for travel, especially during periods of heavier snowfall. Visibility may drop quickly, and untreated roads could become slick with little warning.
The weather service emphasized that hazardous travel conditions are possible at times today and Wednesday, particularly during heavier snow bursts.
Residents and travelers across northern Michigan are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions as lake effect snow continues to evolve.
