Jackson, Mississippi – A rapid warming trend is underway across the Jackson area following a cold overnight period, according to the National Weather Service.
Early Tuesday morning conditions at Hawkins Field Airport showed temperatures near 32°F, following an overnight low around 26°F under partly cloudy skies. Winds were light from the northwest, limiting wind chill impacts but allowing temperatures to dip below freezing during the early morning hours.
The National Weather Service reports that Tuesday will be sunny and seasonably cool, with highs reaching near 44°F. Clear skies Tuesday night will allow temperatures to fall again, with lows near 27°F, marking the final widespread freeze expected this week.
Conditions warm significantly beginning Wednesday, with sunny skies and highs climbing to around 57°F. Overnight lows Wednesday night are forecast to remain above freezing near 35°F, signaling the start of a sustained warmup across central Mississippi.
By New Year’s Day, temperatures are expected to reach near 64°F, with continued sunshine and light southwest winds. The warming trend continues into Friday, when highs could reach 71°F ahead of an approaching weather system.
Rain chances increase late Friday, with a 30 percent chance of showers during the afternoon and evening. A slight chance of thunderstorms is possible Friday night, though no severe weather is currently anticipated. Overnight lows Friday night are forecast near 54°F.
No hazardous winter weather is expected during this period, and no watches or warnings are in effect. The National Weather Service notes that the probability of hazardous weather remains low through the end of the week.
Commuters, students, and outdoor workers should prepare for cold mornings early this week but plan for much warmer afternoons by midweek and into the holiday period.
