Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Snowy and hazardous travel conditions are expected to impact the Pittsburgh area as a winter weather system moves through the region, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for western Pennsylvania, warning that snow-covered roads could create hazardous travel late tonight and into Wednesday. Snow showers are already developing across the area, with conditions expected to worsen overnight.
Forecasters indicate that widespread snow is expected late Wednesday, with at least 2 inches of accumulation possible across portions of the region. While exact totals remain uncertain, enough snow is anticipated to impact road conditions, particularly during the morning and evening commute periods.
As of early Tuesday, conditions at Pittsburgh International Airport included heavy snow and freezing fog, with temperatures near 21 degrees and visibility reduced to one-quarter mile. Wind chills were reported in the single digits, further complicating travel and outdoor activities.
The National Weather Service notes that Winter Weather Advisories may be needed for parts of the area if snow coverage and accumulation increase as expected. Winds are forecast to remain moderate, but cold temperatures will allow snow to accumulate efficiently on untreated surfaces.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions. Pedestrians should also exercise caution due to slippery sidewalks and reduced visibility at times.
Snow chances continue into Wednesday night before conditions improve slightly on New Year’s Day, when skies turn partly sunny and highs reach the mid-20s. Cold temperatures will persist through the end of the week.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and alerts as the storm system develops and impacts become clearer.
