Birmingham, Alabama — A sharp cold front moving through Central Alabama is ushering in much colder and windier conditions, with temperatures falling through the day and overnight lows dropping into the 20s, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

Today’s temperatures reached the mid-40s early in Birmingham, but readings are expected to fall steadily through the afternoon as northwest winds increase behind the front. Winds of 10 to 20 mph, with occasional higher gusts, will make conditions feel significantly colder than the thermometer suggests. Clouds and a few lingering rain showers are possible early in southeastern counties, but skies will clear from the northwest as the day progresses.

By tonight, clear skies and continued northwest winds will allow temperatures to drop quickly. Lows around 24 degrees are forecast for Birmingham, with colder readings possible in surrounding rural areas. Even light winds of 5 to 15 mph overnight will create a notable wind chill, making conditions feel much colder than actual air temperatures.

On Tuesday, cold air remains firmly in place. Afternoon highs are expected to reach only the upper 30s to mid-40s, despite mostly sunny skies. Northwest winds will remain breezy at times, again contributing to a colder feel throughout the day. While no precipitation is expected, the combination of sunshine and wind will do little to offset the chill.

Forecasters note that this cold snap is typical behind strong winter cold fronts but may catch residents off guard after milder recent conditions. Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, protect pets and sensitive plants, and use caution with space heaters or other heating sources.

Cold but dry weather is expected to continue into midweek, with gradual moderation in temperatures later in the week as winds ease and high pressure settles over the region.
