Rhode Island – Headlights blur through fog and light rain early this morning as damp air clings to roads across the state. Pavement stays slick, visibility drops at times, and a sharp temperature drop later today could turn routine travel risky fast.

According to the National Weather Service, rain continues through late morning with areas of fog reducing visibility across Providence and nearby communities. Temperatures climb into the mid-50s by midday, then reverse course this afternoon as colder air sweeps in behind the system. Gusty winds increase, helping roads dry briefly before temperatures fall.

By evening, readings slide below freezing. Any leftover moisture may refreeze quickly, creating black ice on untreated roads, bridges, and ramps. Drivers along I-95, I-195, and Route 6 should plan extra time and reduce speed after sunset. The risk is highest in shaded neighborhoods and less-traveled side streets.

Monday night turns noticeably colder. Skies partially clear, winds stay brisk, and lows drop into the low 20s. That sets the stage for a colder, more winterlike feel heading into midweek as year-end travel ramps up.

Tuesday brings sunshine but stays blustery, with highs near 30. Wednesday remains mostly cloudy and cold, and a small chance of snow showers appears Wednesday night. Even light flakes could coat roads just as New Year’s Eve plans get underway.

New Year’s Day 2026 looks mostly sunny but cold, with highs in the mid-20s and lingering icy patches possible early. Winter weather remains close enough to require caution through the first days of the new year.
