Minneapolis, Minnesota – A severe winter storm is intensifying across eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin today, with increased snowfall totals and dangerous travel conditions expected through early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen, the snowfall forecast has increased overnight, with amounts trending about an inch higher across much of the region. Forecast maps show 5 to 8 inches common across central areas, with 7 to 10 inches expected in parts of eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. A localized band of 10 inches or more is also possible, though confidence in the exact location remains low.

The National Weather Service noted that the footprint of heavy snowfall of 6 inches or more has expanded westward, increasing the risk of widespread impacts.

In Barron County, Wisconsin, the Sheriff’s Department warned that snow began early Sunday with fog and light drizzle before transitioning to heavier snow and strong northwest winds. Officials said winds gusting 40 to 50 mph could rapidly produce blizzard conditions, with blowing and drifting snow significantly reducing visibility.

Authorities cautioned that dangerous, potentially life-threatening travel conditions are expected to develop today and continue into early Monday morning. Snowfall amounts in Barron County are now forecast to reach 7 to 10 inches, with drifting continuing even after snowfall tapers.

Residents are urged to allow extra travel time, slow down, and prepare for rapidly deteriorating road conditions. Officials emphasized that four-wheel drive does not prevent crashes in poor visibility and drifting snow.

For commuters, students, and travelers across eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin, the storm may disrupt travel throughout the day and into the Monday morning commute.

Additional updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
