Madison, Wisconsin – Snow and powerful winds are set to hit southern Wisconsin Sunday night, creating hazardous travel conditions into the Monday morning commute as a Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect.

Snow develops Sunday evening, becoming steadier overnight as winds rapidly increase. In Madison and across Dane County, snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected by midday Monday. Areas farther east toward Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Dodge, and Washington counties could see 2 to 4 inches. Winds will be the bigger concern, with gusts reaching 50 mph in Dane County and up to 55 mph in east-central Wisconsin.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, the advisory runs from 6 p.m. Sunday through noon Monday. Blowing and drifting snow may sharply reduce visibility, especially on north-south roads and open rural stretches. I-39/90, US-12, and US-18 could see brief whiteout conditions overnight and early Monday.

Road crews across Dane and Iowa counties are expected to be active, but rapidly falling snow and strong winds may limit how quickly roads improve. Tree branches could snap under gusty winds, leading to isolated power outages. The combination of snow and wind may also create slick conditions on sidewalks and untreated surfaces near schools and government buildings.

Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra space, and allow more time Monday morning. Charge phones and secure loose outdoor items before winds peak overnight. Those traveling should check 511 Wisconsin for the latest road conditions before leaving.

Conditions gradually improve late Monday morning as winds ease and snow tapers, but cold air will linger into midweek.
