Buffalo, New York – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. EST Saturday for parts of north-central New York, with heavy snow, brief icing, and hazardous travel conditions expected, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
The warning covers Wayne, Northern Cayuga, and Oswego counties, including the cities of Newark, Fair Haven, and Oswego.
Forecasters say total snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches are expected across the region. There is also a chance for a brief period of sleet and freezing rain, with ice accumulations of a few hundredths of an inch, which could further worsen road conditions.
Snowfall rates may briefly reach up to 2 inches per hour late Friday afternoon and early evening, significantly reducing visibility and making travel difficult. The heaviest snow and greatest impacts are expected from mid-afternoon through mid-evening, coinciding with the Friday evening commute and post-Christmas holiday travel.
The National Weather Service warns that travel will be very difficult, with deep snow cover on roadways and very poor visibility during periods of heavy snowfall. Drivers may encounter rapidly changing conditions, especially during bursts of intense snow.
Officials urge motorists to use extreme caution or delay travel if possible. Road conditions may deteriorate quickly, particularly during the evening hours before snowfall tapers overnight.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and submit snow and ice reports to the National Weather Service through its website or social media channels.
The Winter Storm Warning is scheduled to expire at 4 a.m. EST Saturday, though lingering snow-covered roads and slick spots may continue to affect travel into the early morning hours.
