Fresno, California – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across the Sierra Nevada above 7,000 feet, where 4 to 6 feet of total snowfall is expected by Friday evening, creating extremely hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, heavy snow will continue from Yosemite National Park south to the Lake Isabella area, with snowfall rates high enough to produce rapid accumulation. Forecasters report daily snowfall probabilities of 12 inches reaching 80 to 90 percent through Friday in the higher elevations.

Blowing snow and heavy snow loads are expected to significantly reduce visibility and strain infrastructure across the Sierra. The Weather Service advises that travel is not recommended in affected areas due to the combination of deep snow, drifting, and rapidly changing conditions.

Snow levels are expected to remain above 7,000 feet for much of the event, though forecasters note that snow levels could dip as low as 5,000 feet by the weekend, potentially expanding impacts to lower elevations and mountain communities.

In addition to snowfall depth, snow loading on trees and structures may increase the risk of damage, particularly in areas that have already received significant accumulation earlier this week. Strong winds at higher elevations may further compound impacts by creating whiteout conditions at times.

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Friday evening, and additional extensions are possible if heavy snow persists longer than expected. Officials urge anyone planning travel into the Sierra Nevada to reconsider plans and monitor the latest forecasts and road conditions.

Road condition updates are available through Caltrans, and travelers are encouraged to check conditions frequently as closures may occur with little notice.
