Binghamton, NY – Winter is making its presence felt across central New York today as a cold front sweeps through the region, bringing rapidly falling temperatures and developing lake effect snow, particularly for areas north of the Southern Tier.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, temperatures started the morning in the low to mid-30s, but will actually fall through the day, dropping into the mid to upper 20s by this afternoon as colder air pours in behind the front.
As the cold front moves through, lake effect snow showers are expected to develop across northern portions of the forecast area, with the most persistent snow bands setting up later today and this evening. Forecasters say a more organized band of moderate snow is likely to impact parts of Oneida, Onondaga, and Madison counties this afternoon and evening.
Snowfall amounts through tonight are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches in lighter areas, with 2 to 4 inches possible in more persistent lake effect bands, especially north of Syracuse and closer to the Thruway corridor. Snow showers are expected to gradually weaken overnight, ending by sunrise Monday as bands lift north.
Travel conditions could deteriorate quickly this afternoon and evening, particularly on Interstate 81, Interstate 90, and secondary roads in central and northern New York. Drivers heading north are urged to check conditions before traveling and be prepared for reduced visibility and slick roads.
Communities across Onondaga County, Oneida County, Madison County, and surrounding areas of central New York should remain weather-aware as winter conditions settle in on the season’s first full day.
