Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana is set for a dramatic temperature swing this holiday week, starting with cold conditions today before a strong warming trend brings near-record warmth by Christmas Day.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, highs today and tonight will remain chilly, generally in the upper 20s to low 30s, with overnight lows falling to 18 to 23 degrees. The cold won’t last long, however, as temperatures begin rising steadily heading into midweek.

Forecasters say warming will continue through Christmas Day, with high temperatures expected to climb into the 50s and even low 60s across parts of northern Indiana — levels that are near record warmth for late December.

Along with the warmer air, rain chances will return. There is a low chance of rain Monday into Monday evening, with a possible rain-snow mix across parts of southern Michigan. Rain chances increase Christmas Eve (Wednesday) into Christmas Day (Thursday), with probabilities ranging from 20 to 50 percent depending on location.

Despite the precipitation chances, no widespread hazardous weather is expected at this time. Travel impacts appear limited, though motorists should remain alert for slick spots early in the week before temperatures rise above freezing.

Communities across Allen County, St. Joseph County, Elkhart County, DeKalb County, and surrounding areas of northern Indiana should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions and continue monitoring forecasts as Christmas approaches.
