Hastings, Nebraska — Dry conditions and gusty southerly winds are creating near-critical fire weather concerns across south-central Nebraska on Friday, with wind gusts expected to reach between 25 and 35 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, warm temperatures combined with low humidity and strong winds will elevate the risk for grass and rangeland fires through the afternoon. Forecasters said any fires that start could spread rapidly, especially in open and rural areas.

High temperatures on Friday are forecast to range from the upper 40s to lower 60s across the region, adding to the fire risk as dormant vegetation remains dry. Winds are expected to be strongest during the afternoon hours before gradually diminishing later in the evening.

A cold front is forecast to move through the area late Friday night, bringing cooler temperatures for the weekend. Saturday highs are expected to range from the low to upper 40s, followed by highs in the mid-40s to lower 50s on Sunday. Overnight lows are expected to drop into the 20s and lower 30s both nights.

The National Weather Service urged residents to avoid outdoor burning on Friday and to properly dispose of smoking materials. Officials also warned against activities that could spark fires, including the use of equipment that generates heat or sparks in dry grass.

Despite the cooler weekend temperatures, dry conditions are expected to persist, meaning fire danger could remain elevated on windy days. Monday is forecast to bring a modest warm-up, with highs returning to the mid-50s to lower 60s.

Commuters, agricultural workers, and those traveling rural roadways may notice the strongest winds Friday afternoon, particularly in open areas.
