Eastern Kentucky will see quiet and gradually clearing conditions today before a more active weather pattern arrives Thursday, according to the National Weather Service office in Jackson. Wednesday’s highs will range from 47° to 53°, with lows dipping into the low 30s to around 40° under mostly cloudy skies.
A cold front approaching from the west will bring afternoon and evening showers on Thursday, along with isolated thunderstorms. Highs are expected to climb into the upper 50s to lower 60s, well above seasonal averages. Forecasters note that portions of the region—particularly areas west of a line from Morehead to West Liberty, Jackson and Middlesboro—fall under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather.
The primary threat Thursday evening will be isolated damaging wind gusts, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as timing and storm coverage become clearer.
Behind the front, temperatures will fall quickly Thursday night into Friday, bringing a chance for early morning showers and flurries. Friday’s highs will be much cooler, reaching the mid-30s to lower 40s with lingering cloud cover.
A mix of sun and clouds is expected Saturday with highs in the low- to mid-50s, followed by renewed shower chances late Saturday into Sunday. Sunday’s temperatures will range from the mid-40s to mid-50s, with scattered rain possible through the afternoon.
Meteorologists emphasize that while the severe threat remains limited, isolated strong storms should not be dismissed, especially during the early evening hours on Thursday.
