Strong winds and heightened fire danger will dominate the weather today across southern Colorado as High Wind Warnings and Red Flag Warnings remain in effect through tonight, according to the National Weather Service Pueblo office. Forecasters warn that gusts could reach 55 to 60 mph, creating hazardous travel, blowing dust and an elevated wildfire threat.

According to the National Weather Service, the strongest winds are expected across the plains late Wednesday afternoon and evening, while the central mountains, Wet Mountains, Teller County and the I-25 corridor will also experience powerful gusts. Winds of 30 to 40 mph, with peak gusts approaching 60 mph, are forecast until early Thursday morning.

Low humidity—falling into the low to mid teens—combined with strong winds has prompted Red Flag Warnings for most lower-elevation counties, including Fremont County and areas eastward. Fire officials stress that any spark could spread rapidly under these conditions, and residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly discard smoking materials and secure potential ignition sources.

Blowing dust and unsecured objects pose additional hazards, and the Weather Service advises residents to secure holiday decorations, trash bins and lightweight outdoor equipment before sunset. Travel may become challenging for high-profile vehicles, especially along exposed stretches of I-25 and Highway 50.

Conditions will gradually ease overnight, with winds diminishing after 3 a.m. Thursday, although breezy weather may linger into the morning.

Officials remind the public to stay alert for potential updates and follow all fire-safety restrictions during this period of heightened risk.
