Winnipeg, MB – Police are reminding drivers to plan ahead this holiday season after dozens were caught impaired during recent checkstops across the city.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers conducted Holiday Season Checkstops between December 8 and Saturday, December 14, 2025, with assistance from the Manitoba RCMP on Friday, December 13. The program will continue throughout December and into New Year’s Eve.

During the enforcement period, police stopped 547 vehicles citywide. Officers identified 22 drivers who were under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Enforcement outcomes included five Immediate Roadside Prohibitions for alcohol-related failures, along with one driver who failed a drug-screening test. Police also issued 16 warnings to drivers who registered readings in the warning range.

The Holiday Checkstop Program is aimed at reducing impaired driving during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, when social gatherings and celebrations increase the risk on local roads.

Police emphasized that impaired driving remains a leading cause of serious collisions, especially during the holiday season. Drivers are urged not to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or cannabis.

Residents are encouraged to choose safe alternatives such as a designated driver, taxi or rideshare services like Uber or Lyft, Winnipeg Transit, or community programs like Operation Red Nose Winnipeg.

The 2025 Festive Season Checkstop Program is supported by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries and will continue across Winnipeg in the coming weeks.
