Boston, MA – A winter weather pattern taking shape across the eastern U.S. is expected to bring significant snow impacts to New England on Monday, with parts of the region facing hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, lake-effect snow will continue Monday east of Lakes Erie and Ontario, feeding snow bands that extend into portions of New York and northern New England. While the heaviest accumulations are expected closer to the Great Lakes, forecasters warn that snow showers and accumulating snowfall could still impact travel across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

In the Boston area, periods of snow are possible Monday, particularly during the morning and midday hours. While totals in the immediate metro may be lower, localized accumulations of several inches are possible farther inland and across higher elevations. In parts of upstate New York and northern New England, snowfall totals could reach 6 to 12 inches, especially where lake-effect bands persist.

The National Weather Service says the snow threat coincides with a broader active weather pattern affecting much of the country. A cold front moving across the East will reinforce cold air, allowing snow to remain the dominant precipitation type throughout the day Monday.

Drivers are urged to prepare for reduced visibility, snow-covered roads, and slippery conditions, particularly on highways and untreated secondary roads. The Monday commute could be impacted in areas where snow bands intensify unexpectedly.

Meanwhile, forecasters are also monitoring a series of Pacific systems that will impact the western U.S. this week, highlighting a busy national weather pattern as mid-December continues.

Residents across New England are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, allow extra travel time Monday, and follow guidance from state and local officials as winter conditions evolve.
