Baltimore, MD – A bitterly cold night is unfolding across parts of Maryland, eastern West Virginia, and northern Virginia, with dangerous wind chills expected to last into Monday morning, according to forecasters.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through 10 a.m. Monday, primarily for higher elevation areas. Wind chill values are forecast to range from just above zero at lower elevations to negative teens in the mountains, creating a serious risk for cold-related illness.
The coldest conditions are expected overnight through early Monday morning across areas such as western Allegany and Garrett counties in Maryland, along with nearby portions of eastern West Virginia, including Oakland, Franklin, and surrounding mountain communities. In these areas, subzero wind chills may persist for several hours.
Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple warm layers, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Extra caution is advised for children, older adults, and anyone without adequate heat.
Even outside advisory areas, very cold wind chills near zero are expected overnight across much of central Maryland and the Washington metro, including Frederick, Hagerstown, and Westminster.
Temperatures are expected to slowly moderate later Monday morning, but cold conditions may linger into the early commute, especially in sheltered and higher terrain locations.
Officials encourage residents to monitor local forecasts and continue cold safety practices until temperatures climb safely above freezing.
