Huntsville, AL – A dangerous stretch of cold weather is impacting north Alabama and the Tennessee Valley, with subfreezing temperatures and bitter wind chills expected through Monday, according to forecasters.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, temperatures will remain below freezing through around noon Monday, while wind chill values drop into the teens today and into the single digits overnight into Monday morning. These conditions significantly increase the risk of cold-related illness and frostbite, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure.
The coldest wind chills are expected late Sunday night through early Monday morning, with areas across Madison, Limestone, Morgan, Cullman, Jackson, and Marshall counties experiencing the harshest conditions. Even brief exposure during the overnight and early morning hours could be dangerous for vulnerable populations.
The NWS urges residents to take immediate precautions, including:
- Limiting time outdoors, especially overnight
- Bringing pets indoors
- Dressing in multiple warm layers, covering exposed skin
- Checking on elderly neighbors and family members
- Keeping space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable
- Dripping faucets to prevent frozen pipes
Officials emphasize that children, seniors, people with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and those without adequate shelter face the greatest risk during extreme cold events.
While temperatures are expected to slowly recover Monday afternoon, the prolonged cold may continue to cause icy patches on roads, particularly on bridges and shaded areas.
Residents are encouraged to remain weather-aware and continue cold safety practices until temperatures climb above freezing.
