Ohio’s lakeshore wakes up under swirling snow and reduced visibility as lake-effect bands continue to hammer the Cleveland metro. Snow blows sideways across highways, piling quickly on untreated roads and creating whiteout bursts that arrive with little warning.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Lake-Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST Monday for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties. Additional snowfall of 3 to 7 inches is expected in the most persistent bands, with localized higher totals near the lakeshore. Wind gusts up to 35 mph are producing blowing and drifting snow.

Travel conditions are expected to remain very difficult today, especially along I-90, I-271, and secondary roads near the lake. Visibility may drop quickly as heavier bands pass through. Drivers are urged to slow down, leave extra distance, and carry emergency supplies if travel cannot be avoided.

Temperatures stay locked in the cold, hovering in the teens, while wind chills dip near zero to 10 below at times. That cold helps snow stick and prevents melting, increasing the risk of packed snow and icy surfaces through the day.

Snow intensity gradually tapers later tonight, though scattered snow showers linger into Monday. By Tuesday, skies turn partly sunny and highs rebound into the mid-30s, offering a brief recovery window. Even then, melted snow during the day could refreeze at night, creating black ice concerns.

Looking toward midweek, temperatures continue to moderate into the upper 30s and near 40, with rain chances returning by Wednesday night. Any transition back to colder air later in the week could reopen snow potential.

With Christmas travel approaching, northeast Ohio residents should stay alert and flexible. Conditions can change fast near Lake Erie.
