South Bend, IN – Residents in South Bend should prepare for accumulating snow and dangerously cold temperatures this weekend as a winter system moves through northern Indiana, bringing slick roads followed by subzero wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, system snow will overspread the South Bend area late Saturday morning, continuing through Saturday afternoon before tapering off early Saturday evening. The bulk of snowfall is expected between noon and 6 p.m. Saturday, when travel conditions may deteriorate quickly.

Snowfall totals in South Bend are expected to be moderate, with higher amounts possible south of U.S. 24. Temperatures in the mid to upper teens will allow snow to accumulate efficiently, increasing the risk of snow-covered and slippery roadways across the city.

After the system snow exits, lake effect snow may follow, keeping roads slick into Saturday night. Conditions will worsen as arctic air moves in, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season so far.

Forecasters warn that Saturday night and Sunday night will be dangerously cold, with wind chills well below zero. Overnight lows will drop into the single digits, and wind chills may reach 10 to 20 degrees below zero, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.

Residents are urged to limit unnecessary travel, dress in layers, and ensure pets, pipes, and vulnerable individuals are protected from the extreme cold. Drivers should slow down and check road conditions before heading out.
