Garrett County, MD – A Blizzard Warning remains in effect through 10 a.m. Thursday across western Maryland and much of the West Virginia highlands as heavy snow, 50 mph wind gusts, and near-zero visibility grip the region.
According to the National Weather Service, whiteout conditions will continue overnight in Garrett County, Maryland, and Preston, Tucker, Pocahontas, Randolph, Webster, Greenbrier, Grant, and Pendleton Counties in West Virginia. Total snowfall is expected between 4 and 8 inches, with locally higher totals above 2,500 feet along the Allegheny Front.
Meteorologists warn that travel will be “treacherous and potentially life-threatening” as widespread blowing snow reduces visibility to a quarter-mile or less. Wind gusts may topple tree branches and create isolated power outages. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to turn slick overnight, affecting the Thursday morning commute.
Officials urge residents to avoid travel except in emergencies and to carry a winter survival kit if they must drive. Motorists are advised to stay with their vehicles if stranded and to check 511 for up-to-date road conditions.
The heaviest snow is expected to taper off after sunrise Thursday, but blowing and drifting will persist through midday.
