BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday for the eastern Lake Ontario region as snow continues to impact travel across parts of northern New York, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo reported that an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected into Sunday evening, with the highest amounts likely along the western slopes of the Tug Hill Plateau. The advisory covers Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties, including the cities of Oswego, Watertown and Lowville.

Meteorologists said roads are becoming snow covered and slick, with visibility reduced in heavier bursts of lake-effect snow. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, as snowfall intensity may vary significantly over short distances.

“During lake-effect snow, weather conditions can change quickly from clear skies to near whiteout visibility within a few miles,” the weather service said in its advisory.

Temperatures Sunday afternoon were in the upper 20s to lower 30s, cold enough for snow to stick on untreated roads and elevated surfaces. Snowfall rates are expected to diminish later this evening as winds gradually shift and drier air moves in overnight.

The weather service encouraged the public to submit snowfall reports through its website or social media to help verify storm totals.

This event marks another in a series of early-season lake-effect systems that have targeted northern New York since late November, with Tug Hill again seeing some of the region’s highest totals.
