Rockford, IL – Rockford just logged its fastest start to winter snowfall since weather records began in 1905, with 17.1 inches already measured this season — all before mid-December.

According to the National Weather Service, 15.9 inches of snow have fallen over the past nine days alone, marking the snowiest such stretch in Rockford since February 2018. With that total, the city has already matched the snowfall it received during the entire 2024–2025 winter season, a stark signal that this year’s weather pattern is shifting dramatically.

Chicago matched Rockford’s snow total with 17.1 inches, making it the city’s quickest season start since 1978. The past nine days have also been the snowiest in Chicago since February 2021. Both cities are on pace to exceed long-term seasonal averages if the pattern holds.

Local officials are warning of continued travel delays and reduced visibility, especially on untreated side streets and rural roads. Plow crews are active but face challenges with back-to-back snow systems and below-freezing temperatures.

Cold air will keep conditions icy into early next week, with additional snow chances possible. Residents should prepare for longer commutes, check on elderly neighbors, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready.

Warnings remain in place through the weekend, with updates expected as the next system develops.
