CHICAGO, IL – The Chicago area recently saw snowfall totals ranging from one to three inches, which will soon be followed by a significant drop in temperatures and bitter cold wind chills starting Wednesday.
According to the US National Weather Service Chicago Illinois, most of the area wound up with 1 to 3 inches of accumulation following the snow on Monday, December 1st. The storm system brought light to moderate snow across northern and central portions of Illinois and Indiana during the afternoon and evening, causing drivers to encounter messy travel conditions during the PM commute.
The highest totals were generally found south of the I-80 corridor. A few of the highest reported snowfall totals included:
- Lakewood Shores: 3.3 inches
- Crescent City: 3.2 inches
- Peotone: 3.1 inches
- Kankakee: 3.0 inches
- Mazon: 3.0 inches
- Chatsworth: 3.0 inches
Additional snowfall totals included 1.4 inches at Chicago – O’Hare and 1.6 inches at the NWS Chicago office in Romeoville.
Looking ahead, a passing cold front is slated to bring light snow to parts of the area tomorrow late night and afternoon. Conditions will then turn significantly colder for Wednesday night through Friday morning, with wind chills as low as -15 to -20 expected at times. This bitter cold is anticipated to last through Thursday night. Sub-zero overnight lows are forecast for both Wednesday and Thursday nights, with a likelihood of ice formation on area rivers that could lead to freeze-up ice jams.
