Dedham, MA – A Quincy woman reportedly lost $10,000 to a scammer posing as a member of the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office, officials confirmed Monday.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the victim was contacted by a caller claiming she had “missed jury duty” and needed to pay fines immediately to avoid arrest. The woman, believing the call was legitimate, sent two $5,000 payments through Bitcoin machines located in Quincy and at a Cumberland Farms store in Braintree.

When she later arrived at the Sheriff’s facility in Dedham to address the supposed summons, deputies informed her the call was a scam. She has since filed a report with the Quincy Police Department.

Authorities emphasize that no law enforcement agency will ever demand payment, gift cards, or cryptocurrency for missed jury duty, warrants, or fines. “If you receive a call like this—hang up,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a public alert Tuesday.

Officials warn residents to stay alert as such scams are increasing across Massachusetts. Anyone receiving similar calls should immediately contact their local police department or the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office before taking any action.
