Portland, ME – Maine’s first taste of winter isn’t over yet. Arctic air gripping New England will stick around through December 9–15, keeping temperatures well below normal across much of the state, according to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center.

NOAA’s 8–14 Day Outlook, issued December 1, shows colder-than-average conditions persisting over the Northeast and Great Lakes, while the western U.S. trends much warmer. For Maine, that means more freezing mornings and limited daytime thawing, especially inland.

Portland, Bangor, and Augusta could see periodic snow showers or a wintry mix midweek as an active storm track brings above-normal precipitation to the region. Travel delays and slick roads are possible for commuters.

Meanwhile, the opposite story unfolds out west. From California to Texas, temperatures are forecast to rise well above seasonal norms, offering a sharp contrast to New England’s continued chill.

Forecasters suggest Maine residents keep winter gear handy through mid-December before a potential moderation in temperatures later in the month. Any relief will likely be short-lived as another round of cold air could return by the holiday season.
