Tulsa, OK – A wintry mix is creating hazardous travel conditions across eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas today, with light ice, sleet, and snow continuing through mid-afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. Monday for Benton, Washington, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, Sebastian, Craig, Ottawa, Mayes, Delaware, Cherokee, Adair, and Le Flore counties. Communities including Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Rogers, Springdale, Tahlequah, Vinita, Grove, Stilwell, and Poteau are experiencing wintry precipitation.
Forecasters report a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with ice accumulations near a light glaze. Even small amounts of ice are enough to make roads dangerous, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Slippery sidewalks and parking lots have also been reported across portions of the region.
According to the NWS, road conditions are likely to remain hazardous until temperatures rise later today. While Nowata and Rogers counties are no longer under the advisory, forecasters note a round of light snow may still occur, though minimal accumulation is expected.
Drivers across east-central, northeast, and southeast Oklahoma—as well as northwest Arkansas—are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and prepare for possible isolated power issues as ice continues to accumulate on elevated surfaces.
Officials recommend monitoring state road condition updates at okRoads.org for Oklahoma and IDriveArkansas.com for Arkansas.
The wintry mix marks one of the season’s earliest frozen precipitation events for the region, and the NWS advises residents to use caution until conditions improve later this afternoon.
