ALBANY, N.Y. – The Capital Region and surrounding areas are bracing for a major winter storm beginning Tuesday morning, with heavy snow expected to make both commutes treacherous. The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of eastern New York, western Massachusetts, northwestern Connecticut, and southern Vermont, where more than 7 inches of snow may fall by late Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin early Tuesday and quickly intensify, producing snowfall rates exceeding one inch per hour in some areas. Travel across I-87, I-90, and Route 7 will likely become difficult by mid-morning as snow covers roads and visibility drops. The heaviest accumulations are expected across higher terrain from the Catskills to the southern Adirondacks.

Temperatures will hover near freezing through the day, keeping snow wet and heavy — a concern for tree limbs and power lines. Motorists are urged to plan ahead, delay unnecessary travel, and give road crews time to clear highways.

The snow is expected to taper off late Tuesday night, though icy spots may persist into the Wednesday morning commute.
