Memphis, TN – A wintry mix of sleet and light freezing rain may create minor travel issues across the Memphis metro Monday evening through early Tuesday morning, as colder air moves into the Mid-South. While significant ice accumulation is not expected, forecasters warn that slick spots could still develop around daybreak—especially on bridges and overpasses.

According to the National Weather Service Memphis, chances for snow have continued to drop, with sleet and freezing rain now the more likely precipitation types for the area. Current forecasts show a 30% chance of sleet in Memphis and a 15% chance of freezing rain, with higher freezing rain probabilities—near 45%—in Jonesboro. Areas like Jackson and Tupelo have little to no risk.

The agency notes ongoing uncertainty regarding how quickly surface temperatures will fall below freezing Monday night. If temperatures dip sooner than expected, patchy icing could form during the late evening and overnight hours. Even so, ice accumulation amounts are projected to remain less than 0.05 inches, limiting overall impacts.

Minor travel impacts are expected for the Tuesday morning commute, particularly north and east of Memphis where temperatures are likely to be coldest. Drivers are urged to use caution, allow extra travel time, and remain alert for black ice on untreated roadways.

Most of the Memphis metro is currently highlighted for minor to minimal impacts in the Winter Storm Severity Index, though brief disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Forecasters recommend residents stay updated, as small temperature shifts could change how impactful the event becomes.
